Another stunning wine, come on, this wine will and always reminds me of Chateau Malartic, and depending on how long you age it, the Malartic vintage compares well. The finish is long with tons of good mineral, ripe fruit, chocolate, vanilla, depth of flavor, and calming acid to bring this entire wine together. This wine is pure heaven, dirt, smoke, roasted animal, saline, mineral, juicy tart red, and blue fruit, with incredible precision and fruit focus – Bravo!The nose on this wine is pure fun, showing tart red fruit, incredible fresh loam, and dirt, hints of mushroom, licorice, roasted animal, a whiff of oak, sage, rosemary, with dirt, and green notes. Also, there are a few lower scoring wines here because of their uniqueness or really good QPR. There will be no rose wines on the list this year. The wine starts off as black as the night with lovely blackberry, black plum, blueberry, smoky notes, and graphite. Today. This one was really tough. The finish is long, green, with passionfruit, more citrus, hay, lemongrass, and floral notes lingering long. To pair with his 2010 Four Gates Petit Verdot, I opened a 2010 Brognagian Petit Verdot, a wine made by Jonathan Hajdu, the first Petit Verdot he made, just like the Four Gates was also Benyo’s first Petit Verdot in 2010. The rest of the wines are the normal suspects, but this year’s crop is a bit better than last year. My love for all things Pinot is well known, and I had such high hopes. The bottle had been opened up almost 48 hours before my visit yet it showed no signs of oxidation.  It had a pretty, floral and what seemed to be plummy nose.  The first thing that came to my mind upon tasting the wine was “mouth coating”.  Tipping the scales at over 15% alcohol this wine was not bashful.  But amazingly, there was no heat – the sensation one gets from an overly alcoholic wine.  While this sensation CAN be felt with wines that are even lower in alcohol, it seemed to me that the fruit, acid and body held up to this high alcohol level and the wine was quite nice. 2012 Four Gates Ayala Santa Clara Valley Red Bordeaux Blend. The fact that the wine continues to coat my mouth and linger long after it is gone blows me away. This past year, I think I am pretty sure about my state on kosher wine overall. The nose is lovely, showing nice ripe blue and red fruit but more elegant than the brob, which is more of a sweet hammer, showing green notes, earth, and hints of mushroom, with red fruit, licorice, lovely floral notes, with smokey notes of roasted game, and lovely sweet garrigue. The first and oldest that I enjoyed was the 1996 vintage Merlot, long before Benyamin used monikers like La Rochelle, M.S.C., or Cuvee D 🙂. However, the Yarden sparkling wines age far better, IMHO. The mouth on this medium-bodied wine is elegant, showing more of the feminine nose, with more blueberry, black plum, nice spices, good salinity, a lovely mouthfeel, and nice green notes that give way to more blue and black fruit. In my little time spent with him Benyomin this afternoon there is truly so much I can write about .  Alas, it is time to get back to the family.  But I want to say that Benyomin is an amazing man for whom i wish fabulous things.  Making only about 400 cases in a remote area in the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains, he is living out a fantasy of mine.  He works with no distributors and his wines can just about ONLY be bought by calling him.  So should you desire an upscale (yet not absurdly priced), well made, organic, kosher California wine – Four Gates is a great bet (if he has any left for you)! The mouth is medium bodied with rich extraction, rich currant, red fruit, with dirt in the background, wrapped in rich and searcing tannin mouthfeel, with roasted herb, and rich tobacco that is backed by elegance and control, blackberry, plum, that gives way to dark chocolate epic control, foliage, and oregano that lingers long with graphite, pencil shavings, and rich leather. The wine is at a point in time where it is impressive and old world, but still gripping with tannin, still it is at peak. However, over the past year, those have been covered, and they were a serious letdown. I used the tasting to do an interesting side by side comparison of the 2007 Yarden Blanc de Blancs and the newly released 2007 Yarden Blanc de Blancs late disgorged. So, as is my custom, as many ask me what wines I like of the new releases, here are my notes on the new wines. The Drappier which is mevushal has been a Drink-now style wine, and again Drappier prints the dosage date, so use that to decide if the bottle in front of you is too old. LOVELY!!! The last one was the epic 2015 Shirah Gruner Veltliner. What was interesting was that I did not know that the late disgorged Yarden wines were also Brut nature wines, AKA Zero Dosage wines! The mouth on this medium bodied wine is beyond unique, it is layered, rich, and oily, almost unctuous, with sweet peach, apricot, ginger, pepper, cloves, and white cinnamon, with rich orange, mandarin, nectarines, all wrapped in a cocoon of funk, mineral, sweet yellow plum, and loads of roasted herb. A few weeks ago, Benaymin Cantz from Four Gates Winery and friends came over for a Friday night dinner, and I thought it was a good time to open my 2013 Pinot Noirs that I have been saving. The wines on the list this year are all available here in the USA, in Europe, and a few can be found in Israel, as well. Along with a new entry a 2015 Ayala Claret wine. Sqoop has learnt that he is in the US where he was invited by Bill and Melinda Gates and a conference on health. There were a few exceptions, and they were all Chardonnays, but to me, the winner in that story (dry white wine that was not a German Riesling), was the 2015 Herzog Chardonnay, Reserve, Russian River. I could care less about price, color, or where it was made. What fascinated me was that Malvasia is really not a grape we get to taste too often in the kosher market, in the dry format.
